Local Employer Brotherhood Mutual Turns 100
FORT WAYNE, Ind., Aug. 15, 2017 – Fort Wayne’s Brotherhood Mutual Insurance Company, one of the nation’s leading property and casualty insurers of Christian ministries, marks its 100-year anniversary on September 1. The company employs more than 450 people at its Fort Wayne corporate headquarters. The company works through 460 independent agents, nationwide, to insure some 55,000 churches and ministry customers.
Brotherhood Mutual has been part of the Fort Wayne business community since 1939, when the company moved from Grabill, where it was founded in 1917, to offices in the Central Building at Wayne and Harrison streets. After several relocations, the company built a new home office on Vance Avenue in 1960, and in 1980, moved to its distinctive blue-windowed headquarters just off Ludwig Road.
“We are proud to be part of the vibrant and growing community of Fort Wayne and northeast Indiana,” said Mark Robison, Brotherhood Mutual chairman, and president. “This region shaped our company’s first century, and will be an integral part of our next 100 years, as well.”
Outside of its national impact on ministries, Brotherhood Mutual has an enduring reputation as a good corporate citizen and employer. The Indiana Chamber of Commerce has named Brotherhood Mutual among Indiana’s best places to work for 10 consecutive years. The company is also listed in the Best Places to Work Hall of Fame for displaying sustained excellence during the program’s 11-year history.
A testament to Brotherhood Mutual’s repeated selection as a Best Place to Work is its high number of long-tenured employees. In an age where workers typically change jobs every four years, more than 126 employees have been with the company for more than 10 years, 23 of them for more than 25 years, and one of those will celebrate her 56th anniversary with Brotherhood Mutual later this year.
Having also shown itself to be a responsible and ethical corporate citizen, Brotherhood Mutual is a past recipient of the Better Business Bureau (BBB) Torch Award, reflecting the company’s high ethical standards in conducting business. Brotherhood Mutual and its employees regularly support organizations like Bethel College, Taylor University, University of Saint Francis, Associated Churches Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity, Fort Wayne Rescue Mission Ministries, Remedy Live, Youth for Christ, the Fort Wayne Philharmonic Orchestra and the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo, and volunteer with United Way Day of Caring and Habitat for Humanity building projects.
“I congratulate Brotherhood Mutual, its leaders and employees on the company’s 100 years in business,” said Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry. “We’re seeing momentum, investments and excitement in Fort Wayne like never before, and Brotherhood Mutual has always been part of what makes us great. We are grateful to have the company as a valued community partner.”
Brotherhood Mutual plans to celebrate its landmark year by honoring its customers, employees and their families, and local ministry leaders with a private concert by the Grammy-nominated and Dove Award winning group, NEEDTOBREATHE. The company also will launch and financially support Full Strength Network, a new independent nonprofit organization, which will focus its efforts on helping to strengthen ministry leaders and their families.
