Unclaimed Baggage Announces Grand Opening of the “Unclaimed Baggage Museum”
Popular Destination Retailer Unveils New In-Store Experience Worthy of a Road Trip
SCOTTSBORO, Ala., Apr. 5, 2023 — As U.S. travelers embark on spring and summer road trips, Unclaimed Baggage, a popular tourist destination and the nation’s only retailer of lost luggage, has created another reason for fans to plan a trip to Scottsboro, Alabama. The one-of-a-kind store has designed the “Unclaimed Baggage Museum,” displaying more than 70 of the most curious and unusual items they have unpacked from lost bags over their 50+ year history, opening on Friday, April 21, 2023.
“People are endlessly curious about the variety and wonder of items discovered in unclaimed bags,” says Bryan Owens, CEO of Unclaimed Baggage. “And we’ve seen it all! Our store is like an archeological dig, with unclaimed treasures telling stories about people and culture over time and from all parts of the world.”
The oldest items on display include ancient Egyptian artifacts from 1500 BC, found in a well-worn Gucci suitcase. Most items were sold through Christie’s Auction House. The remaining items are showcased, along with the Christie’s catalog and replicas of the sold mummified hawk sarcophagus and funeral mask, made using 3D fabrication technology.
Hoggle, the beloved Jim Henson dwarf puppet and key character in David Bowie’s cult fantasy film Labyrinth, is the most famous display item, and has recently been restored to his original condition. Other notable objects museum guests will encounter include:
· Musical instruments from around the world
· Suits of armor
· Detailed handmade model ship that spans over 4-feet wide
· Violin from 1772
· 1980’s Hermes necklace
· Basketball signed by Michael Jordan
· African and Asian iron statues and plaques from antiquity
· Vintage items like a 19th century box camera, primitive hair tools that were heated on a wood stove and a Victorian era “flirting” fan.
“We discover fascinating items from lost-forever bags every day, but since we’re not museum archivists, we often have no idea of what we have,” added Owens. “In order to create this museum, we’ve drawn on the knowledge and expertise of museum specialists to help with the research, design and installation. It’s a work in progress, as we often discover new facts about the artifacts that we have. The continuous discovery is part of the fun!”
There is something for everyone to enjoy in this museum of oddities and wonders. Yet, the most intriguing facet of all is that these museum artifacts were all found in unclaimed suitcases!
Road-trippers can discover their own treasures in the 50,000-square-foot retail store of unclaimed items in Scottsboro, Alabama, or online at unclaimedbaggage.com.

Unclaimed Baggage to Share the Love with Foster Children This Valentine’s Day
“Love Luggage” Event Leads Week-Long Celebration, Feb. 6-14
SCOTTSBORO, Ala., Jan. 30, 2023 — As romance fills the air this season, Unclaimed Baggage, a popular tourist destination and the nation’s only retailer of lost luggage, invites the community to participate in a special painting project to provide much-needed luggage for children in the foster care system.
The unique opportunity will take place on Saturday, Feb. 11 during the store’s “Bling Week,” an eight-day Valentine’s-themed event during which fans will enjoy an expanded selection of must-have brands and bargains both in-store and online, as well as the opportunity to express their creativity through a give-back project.
“Throughout the year, Unclaimed Baggage takes suitcases to schools, charities, social and business groups to be hand-painted for children moving to new foster homes,” said Jennifer Kritner, Vice President of Retail and Company Culture. “The painted luggage is donated to foster care agencies and replaces the garbage bags many children typically use to transport their belongings.”
The bags are adorned with “works of heart,” often featuring uplifting messages and brightly colored designs which serve to cheer children up on what is otherwise one of the hardest days of their lives.
“A core value at Unclaimed Baggage is to redeem the lost and reclaim the rejected,” added Kritner. “Above shopping and socializing during ‘Bling Week,’ we invite guests to participate in blessing foster children this Valentine’s season. Bring your kids and your friends to paint with us on February 11. It’s a love story that everyone can participate in!”
Other activities and experiences taking place both in-store and online during “Bling Week” include:
An expanded selection of fine and fashion jewelry
Curated gift ideas for sweethearts (handbags, shoes, gifts and accessories)
Spring apparel sprinkled throughout the store
25% off winter clearance
Family-friendly games and Valentine’s Day-themed fun (in-store only)

Popular Retailer ‘Unclaimed Baggage’ Expands Online Store to Include International Markets
The United States’ Only Retailer of Lost Luggage is Now Sending Its Fabulous Finds to Faraway Fans
SCOTTSBORO, Ala., December 1, 2022 — Just in time for holiday shopping, Unclaimed Baggage, a popular tourist destination and the USA’s only merchant of lost luggage, is proud to announce the expansion of their online store to include shipping to Canada, Europe (including the UK), Australia and New Zealand.
A significant milestone for the beloved retailer, the expansion invites millions of new online shoppers to share in the unique opportunity to obtain luxe brands, electronics, jewelry and other merchandise at a bargain price from the comfort of their own homes.
“Reflecting on our history and unique business model, it’s remarkable to consider that what began with a borrowed truck and a $300 loan a little more than 50 years ago, is now an international business with millions of shoppers,” said president of Unclaimed Baggage, Paul Okimoto. “Given the unprecedented volume of unclaimed luggage and cargo across the transportation industry right now, and with the global economy requiring people to find ways to make their dollars stretch a little bit further, the time is right to extend the Unclaimed Baggage experience beyond U.S. borders.”
The retailer stocks approximately 7,000 unique, heavily discounted items each day in the retail store where they are discovered and “reclaimed” by new owners. Store finds range from clothing and sporting goods to musical instruments, vintage concert t-shirts and even exotic treasures, such as a 40-carat emerald, all priced at a bargain.
In 2020, when the pandemic caused Unclaimed Baggage to temporarily close its doors for the first time in its history, the pause in foot traffic served as a catalyst to develop a one-of-a-kind online store that has attracted more than 5.5 million visitors and counting.
The store has made national news for its ever-changing array of unique items from around the world, all sold at an incredible value.
“While we’re grateful for the continued growth of our business, what we’re most proud of as an organization is the opportunity to redeem lost and unclaimed items, giving them a second life and supporting sustainability,” added Okimoto.

Unclaimed Baggage’s 50th Anniversary Road Tour Shares Its One-of-a-Kind Experience with Fans Across the Country
Nation’s only retailer of lost luggage brings a truckload of adventure to all 50 states
SCOTTSBORO, Ala., June 23, 2022 — Unclaimed Baggage, a popular tourist destination and the country’s only merchant of lost baggage, has embarked on a 50-state road tour in celebration of its 50th anniversary.
Led by “Hugo,” a restored 1965 Chevrolet truck named after Unclaimed Baggage’s founder, the tour commenced in May 2022 by following Owens’ original route from Scottsboro to Washington, D.C. Over the course of the tour, Hugo will be seen all over the U.S. and social media, posing with some of the country’s most iconic and unusual roadside attractions.
Already underway, the highly anticipated (and COVID-delayed) “50 years, 50 states” summer road tour will visit all 50 states over the span of 17 weeks, surprising and delighting fans with games, prizes and experiences unique to Unclaimed Baggage. The tour is an expression of gratitude for the fans, team members and community who have supported the family-run business over the course of its history.
Popping up at iconic locations across the nation, Unclaimed Baggage will roll out some of its classic experiences for the public during the tour, including:
The Baggage Experience: Guests and media members have the chance to open and sort the contents of a real unclaimed bag, which could contain anything from gym clothes to a live rattlesnake – it has happened before!
The Museum of Oddities: Guests can explore a collection of the strangest items discovered in lost bags over the years and the stories behind them.
Finders Keepers: Inspired by the TV game show “Let’s Make a Deal,” guests and members of the media can select a suitcase filled with mystery items found in orphaned bags.
Photo ops with “Hugo:” A replica of the famous 1965 Chevy truck that picked up the first unclaimed bags in 1970 will be at each stop.
Unclaimed Baggage attracts over 1 million tourists annually from all 50 states and 40-plus countries. These treasure seekers travel far and wide to visit the 50,000-square-foot store where they can admire and purchase the weird and wonderful goods that airlines and other transportation industries have been unable to reunite with their former owners. Store finds range from clothing and sporting goods to musical instruments, vintage concert t-shirts and even exotic treasures, such as a 40-carat emerald, all priced at a bargain.
“It’s remarkable to think that a little town like Scottsboro, Alabama could blossom into a global tourist phenomenon because of our unique business,” said Bryan Owens, owner of Unclaimed Baggage and son of the organization’s founder, Hugo Doyle Owens. “My father started with a borrowed pickup truck, a $300 loan and a dream. Fifty years ago, he visited Washington, D.C. to purchase the very first batch of unclaimed luggage from Trailways Bus Line. Today, we’re extraordinarily humbled by the enthusiasm around our business and excited to embark on this unprecedented celebratory tour.”
In 2020, when the pandemic caused Unclaimed Baggage to temporarily close its doors for the first time in its history, the pause in foot traffic served as a catalyst to develop a one-of-a-kind online store that has attracted more than 5.5 million visitors and counting. As air travel and in-store retail have largely resumed, Unclaimed Baggage was eager to move forward with its planned road tour, initially scheduled for March 2020.
The Journey from the Baggage Carousel to Scottsboro, Alabama
How does lost luggage make its way from the baggage carousel to the Unclaimed Baggage store? When a suitcase gets lost in transit and can’t be returned to its owner — often because of a missing identification tag — the airline compensates the traveler. Airlines conduct a comprehensive 90-day baggage tracing process, after which only 0.0003% of the billion or so passenger bags checked every year are deemed truly lost. Unclaimed Baggage buys the orphaned luggage and gives it a second life. The retailer stocks approximately 7,000 unique, heavily discounted items each day in the retail store, and thousands more online, where they are discovered and “reclaimed” by new owners.
“From the earliest days, our goal has been to find a purpose for any item possible,” said Owens. “Over the past five decades, we have established partnerships with dozens of local, national and global charity organizations so that any leftover items can meet a need. Generally, for every item purchased through Unclaimed Baggage, we gift another item to under-resourced neighborhoods through our foundation Reclaimed for Good. With such an assorted collection of items in our facilities, it’s possible for us to provide support for a variety of causes about which we’re passionate.”
As the Unclaimed Baggage “50 Years, 50 States” tour continues trucking along this summer, the public is encouraged to follow the adventure online to see where Hugo is headed next. For information, visit unclaimedbaggage.com/blogs/road-tour.
