Data Shows Surprising Worship Music Trends in Churches Across the Nation

Data from Faithlife Proclaim, a church presentation software from Faithlife, makers of Logos Bible Software, highlights trends in worship music choices from churches of all sizes and denominations across the nation. The data, accumulated over the last three years from Proclaim users, identifies both the most popular worship songs as well as songs that are becoming classics during holidays such as Christmas, Easter and Father’s Day.

Overall, the data found that Chris Tomlin and Hillsong each have two songs in the top five most popular worship songs over the past three years, which include:

1.     “Build My Life” by Pat Barrett ft. Chris Tomlin

2.     “What a Beautiful Name” by Hillsong

3.     “Who You Say I Am” by Hillsong

4.     “How Great is Our God” by Chris Tomlin

5.     “10,000 Reasons” (Bless The Lord) by Matt Redman

While modern-day worship music continues to round out the majority of songs played in churches each weekend, hymns remain widely included with “How Great Thou Art,” “Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow” and “Amazing Grace” being among the most popular.

Equally interesting is the trends in songs consistently played at various times of the year. For instance, Chris Tomlin’s “Good, Good Father,” which is typically played in less than 200 churches on any given Sunday, receives spikes in usage each Father’s Day. On Father’s Day 2019, the song was played in more than 700 churches across America.

Similarly, “Hark The Herald Angels Sing” is continually the most sung Christmas hymn and both “Hosanna” and “Christ the Lord is Risen Today” are the most popular Easter songs.

“Faithlife Proclaim’s data gives us a snapshot of trends and popularity of both the new modern-day and traditional worship songs within churches across America,” said Bob Pritchett, founder and CEO of Faithlife. “Overall, this data shows how music unites regardless of size, denomination or location.”

In addition to the in-depth Faithlife Proclaim data, Faithlife tracks church usage of worship songs in real-time, making the information available for the public via Music.faithlife.com.
