Pastors Address Injustice and Suffering From the Pulpit Following Lockdowns and Protests, New Data from Faithlife Shows

Faithlife Releases Sermon Topic Trends from March to May 2020

Church technology company and makers of Logos Bible Software, Faithlife, today released new data revealing the most-used sermon topics throughout the spring of 2020 based on data from nearly 100,000 sermons posted to sermons.faithlife.com since 2019. Since the start of COVID-19 lockdowns and protests following the murder of George Floyd, several sermon subjects have significantly increased in popularity.

The new data compares self-assigned author sermon topic tags from March 15 to May 31, 2020, to their popularity over the trailing year beginning March 15, 2019.

According to the data, the following sermon subjects increased during Pentecost Sunday, which occurred mere days after Floyd’s murder: Injustice, sacrifice, service, submission, government, eschatology, Holy Spirit, power and reverence.

Additionally, during the peak of COVID-19 lockdowns and seasons of social distancing, the following topics increased in popularity: Fear, sickness, prayer, church, comfort, hope, service and family.

The trend lines show the % of sermons including each topic. Topics are self-assigned by pastors.

“This data shows that church leaders across the country are helping their congregants understand how the Bible speaks to the current events of our culture,” said Faithlife Founder and CEO Bob Pritchett. “The data is clear that faith leaders have been bravely fighting on the spiritual frontlines as their congregants have been affected by the pandemic, recent tragedies in the Black community and subsequent protests.”

Each week 1,000-1,500 new sermons are published to sermons.faithlife.com. Pastors can publish a new sermon from Faithlife’s Logos Bible Software, Proclaim presentation software or directly on the website. Roughly 75% of sermons published include topic tags created by the sermon author that describe an idea, person or theological concept covered in that sermon.
