Newly Elected Southern Baptist Convention President J.D. Greear Seeks to Unify and Encourage

Summit Church Pastor and Zondervan Author of Not God Enough Challenges the Incorrect Perceptions of God

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., June 19, 2018 J.D. Greear, pastor of Summit Church, one of the fastest-growing churches in the nation, and newly elected president of the Southern Baptist Convention, is seeking to unite Americans and counter declining disbelief by challenging misperceptions about God.

In his new Zondervan book, Not God Enough, which released in February 2018 to the praise of leaders and readers, Greear showcases his unique ability to explain difficult biblical issues that often lead to doubt, making it clear why the SBC elected him to lead its denomination last week at the annual convention in Dallas.

“I’ve worked with J.D. on two books now—the last being Not God Enough—and there is no one who is more thoughtful and knowledgeable about theology, but who can also communicate the good news more clearly and energetically to a new generation of believers,” said Sandra Vander Zicht, associate publisher and executive editor of Zondervan Books. “The Southern Baptist Convention has made an excellent choice.”

Greear’s election as SBC President comes at a time when churches have been divided over issues surrounding women, abuse and race. Following his election on June 13, Greear tweeted, “The gospel must be greater than anything else that threatens to divide us.”

At a time when faith, for many, is being tested, Greear says much of our division and confusion centers on a misunderstanding of who God is and a lack of faith in His Word. Only 63 percent of Americans say they believe in God with absolute certainty. Furthermore, 65 percent of Christians admit experiencing serious doubts about their faith.

“The Western Christianity in which I have been immersed focuses on the practicality of faith,” writes Greear in Not God Enough. “We present God as the best way to a happy and prosperous life. We show how God is the best explanation for unanswered questions and the best means to the life we desire … These shallow glimpses of God are fine as long as our faith remains untested, but they are utterly insufficient in the midst of serious questioning or intense suffering.”

Greear seeks to provide a new, refreshing view of God to help bring clarity to His nature and His glory. The message of Not God Enough is needed for a nation grappling for answers and searching for hope. In our troubled times, the book helps readers find meaning in a confusing world.
