Museum of the Bible and the Embassy of the Dominican Republic Celebrate Hispanic Heritage

WASHINGTON, Sept. 28, 2022 Museum of the Bible and the Embassy of the Dominican Republic join together on Oct. 1 to celebrate the Bible and Hispanic Heritage Month, hosting several events and exhibits exploring the influence of the Bible on the Spanish-speaking world. Events and activities run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with presentations and lectures occurring from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. More information is available at: https://www.museumofthebible.org/events/hispanic-heritage-celebration.

Included in this inaugural Hispanic Heritage celebration are:

  • a local Hispanic artisan market

  • taste of Hispanic cuisine

  • an exploration of Hispanic hymns and folk songs

  • dance and poetry exhibitions

  • opening and closing remarks by the Dominican Republic Ambassador

  • a special presentation by Dr. Juan Hernández Jr., “The Triumph of the Vernacular: The Rise, Dissemination, and Transformative Power of the Bible in Spanish.”

“The Bible has had an amazing impact throughout the history of the Spanish-speaking world, and we are excited to share its important role at our Hispanic Heritage celebration,” said Sandra Argo, Director of Education at Museum of the Bible. “We are also honored to have Ambassador Sonia Guzmán from the Dominican Republic join us for this celebration in which we will be immersed in the different sounds, flavors, colors and images of this vibrant community.”

Museum of the Bible chose to spotlight Dominican culture because of the strong influence of the Bible in the fabric of this nation. The Dominican Republic is the only country that has the Bible in its highest national symbol: its flag. Professor of Numismatics Miguel Estrella will discuss the history and symbolism of the flag. Estrella personally participated in the flag’s design.

Tickets for the day’s events are $17.99 for in-person and $9.99 for virtual attendance, with discounts for members and students, and are available online at https://www.museumofthebible.org/events/hispanic-heritage-celebration.
