Restaurant Owner Peter Demos Responds to Minimum Wage Increases: ‘Hurting the People You are Trying to Help’

Restaurant CEO and Business Leader Available for Interviews

WHAT:

On January 1, 2024, the minimum wage increased across 22 states and 38 cities and counties, impacting approximately 10 million low-income workers, according to a recent estimate. While the stated purpose of these laws is to positively impact the lives of workers, politicians and progressive activists routinely ignore several concerns and negative implications.

For example, a recent CBS News article reported that fast-food companies impacted by the minimum wage increases, including Pizza Hut, are fighting back with increased service fees and employee layoffs.

Peter Demos, owner of several popular restaurants in Nashville and a seasoned business leader, is available to provide response and/or an analysis on these minimum wage laws and the true impact on our entire nation – its businesses and its people.

Peter offers the following feedback and concerns regarding minimum wage increases:

  • Inflation and price increases – As has already been demonstrated in California and New York, businesses will be put in a position to raise prices in order to compensate for higher labor costs, which will impact low-income consumers disproportionately.

  • Job losses and layoffs – Some businesses have already been forced to terminate employees in response to the increased costs, ultimately hurting the individuals these laws are supposed to help.

  • Increased wages and expectations across industries – An increased minimum wage places upward pressure on all other wages, leading to increased costs, higher prices and more inflation across the board.

Peter notes: “According to the government’s logic, we as employers are so evil that we want to pay people unfairly. That’s an absurd view of how to run a successful business. Increasing the minimum wage is nothing more than a Band-Aid at best. But worse, what will happen is that we are going to be hurting the people you are trying to help. When you increase minimum wages you must increase taxes – social security taxes, unemployment taxes, etc. Therefore, the only group that benefits from minimum wage increases is the government.”
