Peter Demos Discusses Current State of Christianity in ‘On the Duty of Christian Civil Disobedience

ROMULUS, Mich., Aug. 29, 2022 – With today’s culture increasingly seeking to “cancel” those in disagreement, restaurateur Peter Demos, a lawyer by training and CEO of Demos Brands Restaurants, asks readers to acknowledge the critical issues that are impacting Christians around the country in his new book, “On the Duty of Christian Civil Disobedience,” releasing on September 13, 2022.

In the new book, Demos covers topics including the importance of defending Christianity in a changing culture, what civil disobedience means, how disobedience is not the answer to everything, and what to do when governing law violates God’s law, among many other timely conversations.

“In this time of great dissension, I want to encourage Christians and help prepare them to defend what they believe in,” writes Demos. “I hope this book helps people understand that the dangers facing Christianity are real and they are happening now. We must boldly grow in confidence and live out our faith publicly, even when it gets uncomfortable.”

By providing historical examples, alongside scripture and biblical stories, Demos explains the persecution facing Christians today and offers advice on how to respond. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Demos experienced restrictions firsthand while facing shortages of labor and supplies in the restaurant industry, causing him to reflect on the meaning of obedience. Through civil disobedience, we are not to just stand against something, but rather use the opportunity and responsibility to share the truth of the Gospel.

AmericanChristians today are experiencing a time like no other in recent history. There has been a noticeable shift away from conservative Christian values in our society, and even an attitude that characterizes them as aggressive, unbending and uncaring toward progressive and liberal perspectives.

In the book, Demos reflects on the turbulent year that became 2020, which for many people, served as a wake-up call. Conservative Christians have become increasingly tempted to shy away from the convictions of their faith because of societal backlash. He emphasizes the critical need to have purposeful discussions on topics including God is love, disagreement does not equal hate, the dangers of remaining silent and how fear can be a driving force in action.

“Over the past three years, things have become uncomfortable as division, unrest and tension have broken out across the nation,” said Demos. “My heart is saddened as I see the Church moving toward submission. We have a wonderful opportunity to take a stand for truth, despite culture and remain obedient to our Father through listening to God’s Word.”
