I Am Second Releases New Book of Stories from Individuals Who Overcame Obstacles and Found True, Lasting Love

Mike Fisher, Carrie Underwood, Sean Lowe, Danny Gokey and More Share Personal Accounts of Discovering Meaning and Belonging in ‘I Found Love’

PLANO, Texas, Oct. XX, 2020 -
Filled with powerful stories of men and women in the public eye who have broken the barriers of divorce, addiction, racism, abuse, miscarriage, shame and more, “I Found Love: True Stories of Discovering Love, Belonging and Friendship,” will release Jan. 12 from global storytelling organization I Am Second. “I Found Love” is authored by Doug Bender, I Am Second’s Chief Content Writer, and published by Nelson Books.

“If you’re surrounded but alone, ‘liked’ but unloved, continually sending the world your message but feeling always unheard, then you need the stories in this book,” writes Bender. “If busyness has taken the place of connection and if virtual friends have replaced real ones, then these stories of genuine love are for you.”

“I Found Love” is a different kind of love story. The book tells the accounts of people who searched and searched for meaning and fulfillment and only found it when they put their trust in Christ.

“I Found Love” includes raw and compelling anecdotes from Seconds who have found life-changing love, belonging and friendship, including:

  • “Bachelor” contest Sean Lowe;

  • Mike Fisher, former NHL Star, and Carrie Underwood, singer and songwriter;

  • Actors and artists David and Tamela Mann;

  • American Idol contestants and singers Danny Gokey and Jason Castro;

  • Michael Kent, former Neo-Nazi, and Tiffany Whitter, probation officer;

  • Paralympic swimmer Jessica Long; and

  • Marine and MMA fighter Chad Robichaux, to name a few

“You are loved—even if you don’t feel it. You are liked—even if you haven’t seen a thumbs-up in weeks,” writes Bender. “A community is here for you, a people ready to say, ‘You are one of us.’ ‘You belong’ is the message of this book. ‘You are loved’ is its anthem. In these pages, you’ll discover broken hearts healed, broken homes rebuilt, and broken lives resurrected.”

“I Found Love” is the fourth book from I Am Second and will release Jan. 21, 2021, from Nelson Books. For more info, visit https://www.thomasnelson.com/9781400210381/i-found-love/

Inspiring Film Compilation of Survivor Stories Ignites Hope in a Hurting a World

I Am Second Releases ‘I Survived’

PLANO, Texas, Sept. 1, 2020 - Global storytelling organization I Am Second today released its newest film “I Survived,” a collection of survival accounts from individuals who narrowly escaped seemingly impossible obstacles.

Featuring the true stories of 9/11 survivors Brian Birdwell and Sujo John, professional surfer and amputee Bethany Hamilton, former prostitute Annie Lobert and gunshot victim Tyron Flowers, “I Survived” details each individual’s gripping turning point of realizing that their lives would never be the same.

“The five stories referenced in this film are so encouraging for people who are going through their own challenging times.” said John Humphrey, I Am Second Vice-President. “Not only have these individuals survived something traumatic, they turned their story’s around and put their faith into action.”

Today, each individual featured in “I Survived” is using their second chances at life to inspire and help others facing adversity.

Amid a uniquely painful season for the nation, where 25.5% of young adults considered taking their own lives in 2020, the inspiring accounts told in “I Survived” are timely encouragement to anyone who has ever felt like they could not recover from pain or soldier through another day.

“He [God] told me, you are going to go through fiery trials, but I will give you peace and understanding,” said Tyron Flowers. “What I’ve learned is that with God’s love and with Christ in you, you can overcome any obstacle, any abuse, any hatred, any challenges in your life. You will be able to forgive and love others like Christ loves you.”

“I Survived” can be seen exclusively on I Am Second at iamsecond.com or its social media platforms. Additionally, the entire story of each individual “Second” in the “I Survived” film is also available at iamsecond.com.

From Broken to Whole, New I Am Second Short Film Shares One Man’s Powerful Story of Finding Identity and Purpose

Accident Survivor and Amputee Darrin Ray Tells All in New ‘White Chair Film’

DALLAS, July 8, 2020 – Born with a bilateral cleft palate, Darrin Ray experienced bullying growing up, which left him bitter and lonely. Most of his life, he felt out of place and without hope. But now, in the newest White Chair film from storytelling organization I Am Second available now on iamsecond.com, he’s opening up about how he became whole, following a near-death accident that would forever change him.

After experiencing a difficult childhood, Ray was at a point where he finally felt secure in life. He was happily married, living in California with his wife and one child and earning a stable income. That all changed when a drunk driver collided head-on into his car. This crash caused injuries that took 20 years off Ray’s life, resulted in his leg being amputated and completely broke his spirit.

“I knew I needed to forgive him [the driver], but I didn’t want to,” said Ray. “I wanted him to suffer like he made me suffer."

Although he’d grown up going to church, he felt like God had forsaken him. The assurance from his friends that God had a good plan on his life felt trite.

But through the regular encouragement from a chaplain dedicated to helping him hope again, Ray realized that he could still serve a purpose despite his injuries.

“Limb loss is not equivalent to life loss,” said Ray. “Out of my despair, God brought me hope. At first, I wanted to die. But now, I want to live.”

During rehab, Ray found out that the driver was sent to jail, and he was awarded $2.5 million in restitution. During the restitution hearing, Ray surprised the judge with a request that would ultimately impact both his and the driver’s life.

Mike and Carrie: God & Country,” a new exclusive digital short film series from I Am Second, provides an up-close and unfiltered glimpse into the life, relationship and faith of retired NHL player Mike Fisher and his wife Carrie Underwood, seven-time GRAMMY® Award winner.

In the four-part digital series releasing on iamsecond.com via weekly episodes beginning May 27, this powerhouse couple provides insight into how they continually sustain their marriage, despite sometimes differing views and personal loss, and find purpose beyond the professional accomplishments by which the world defines them.

Fisher is no stranger to I Am Second. He was featured in the non-profit’s White Chair short film series in 2014 in which he shared about his personal and professional struggles early in his career before a return to his faith.

In “Mike and Carrie: God & Country,” Fisher is joined by Underwood in a new interview, in which the couple speaks frankly about their personal journeys and provide hope and inspiration to anyone seeking or needing encouragement.

“Since first filming with I Am Second six years ago, I have seen God continue to grow my faith as Carrie and I have together walked through the natural joys and struggles of life,” Mike said. “This new series is not only a continuation of the 2014 White Chair film, but hopefully a reminder to individuals of God’s faithfulness in all situations.”

While Fisher and Underwood have each publicly spoken about their personal paths in the past, the new I Am Second series provides a specific, intimate look into their relationship, parenting journey and faith.

“We wanted to do this to share some of our personal journey in hopes that viewers will be inspired by it, and maybe even take one more step in pursuing a relationship with God,” said Underwood.

The full series will release in four-part installments, beginning on May 27, on iamsecond.com.

Decorated Team USA Paralympic Swimmer Opens Up About Healing from Anger and Brokenness

Team USA’s Jessica Long is one of the most decorated U.S. Paralympic swimmers in history, yet, as shared in a new short film from I Am Second, despite the awards and sponsorships, Long suffered from constant feelings of unworthiness, anger and resentment until she discovered her true identity and learned to forgive.

Russian-Born, Baltimore-Raised Athlete Shares Experiences with Adoption, Disability and Forgiveness in New I Am Second Short Film

Team USA’s Jessica Long is one of the most decorated U.S. Paralympic swimmers in history, boasting 23 Paralympic medals, three ESPY awards and inclusion in Sports Illustrated World’s Best Female Athletes. Yet, as shared in a new short film from storytelling organization I Am Second, despite the awards and sponsorships, Long suffered from constant feelings of unworthiness, anger and resentment until she discovered her true identity and learned to forgive.

Long was born with fibular hemimelia. She was given up for adoption by her 16-year-old Russian mother and grew up in Maryland with devoted adoptive parents who did everything they could to help the leg deformity with which she had been born.

“When I think back on my childhood, I didn’t feel adopted. I just knew I was angry that I didn’t have legs,” said Long.

At age 10, she discovered a love and talent for swimming. Two years later, at 12 years old, she became the youngest competitor on the U.S. Paralympic Team and won three gold medals at the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens, Greece.

But even as Long’s accolades grew, including breaking 18 world records in one year and gaining sponsorships with world-renowned companies, she still felt broken and sad.

“My worth was in swimming. My identity was in swimming,” Long said. “But I realized I had no control over my life.”

It was during a church youth group meeting that Long realized she couldn’t go on alone anymore and turned to God. For the first time in her life, Long says she felt “enough.”

“Every day when I put on these prosthetics, it's almost this beautiful reminder that I can’t do everything on my own,” Long said.

She realized the experience was prepping her heart for a pivotal moment to come -- meeting her birth mom for the first time and being confronted with the choice to forgive her.

GRAMMY-Nominated Danny Gokey Tells of the Paralyzing Fear that Nearly Kept Him from Musical Success

Danny Gokey shares of the debilitating fear that nearly kept him from catching his big break in a new short film from I Am Second.

New I Am Second Short Film Shares Artist’s Painful Personal Journey

Danny Gokey continues to demonstrate his musical success earning chart-topping hits and award nominations, including three GRAMMY nominations. But few are aware of the debilitating fear that nearly kept him from catching his big break, a story Gokey is now sharing in a new short film from I Am Second, a storytelling organization.

I Am Second is known for delivering powerful and inspiring stories of lives changed. Its website, iamsecond.com, features more than 100 short films featuring celebrities, cultural influencers and everyday people. Gokey joins a number of musicians, including fellow American Idol alum Jason Castro, KoRn’s Brian Head Welch and Country Artist Josh Turner, in opening up about his personal journey.

Though Gokey has always been vocal about his faith in God, fear has been a constant battle since he was a young child, as he shares in the I Am Second film. This was only propelled by the death of his wife Sophia, four years into their marriage.

Yet, it was the tragedy of Sophia’s death that led Gokey to audition for American Idol, a promise he had made to his late wife. But as he progressed through the audition process, the deep fear he had fought since childhood grew.

“When I finally made it to the top 50, I literally looked at God and said, ‘I don’t know what’s going on here, but I do not want to go on this TV show. I’m a mess, and I’m going to look like a mess in front of all these people,’” Gokey said.

In the I Am Second short film, available now on iamsecond.com, Gokey shares how he overcame his fear, which led him to not only placing third in the competition but also inspiring millions of viewers with his and Sophia’s story.

'Biggest Loser' Winner Michelle Aguilar Whitehead Reveals How She Finds Purpose and Worth Beyond Weight Loss

In 2008, Michelle Aguilar Whitehead shocked television viewers with a 110-pound weight loss over a short period of time to win NBC’s Biggest Loser: Families. Now over a decade later, a new short film featuring Michelle has released detailing just how much her life has changed, from her marriage to her subsequent weight gain and loss.

New Short Film from I Am Second Releases Prior to the Premier of the Newly Revamped Hit TV Show

Since first sitting down with I Am Second in her White Chair Film to divulge the behind-the-scenes reality of her experience on season 6 of The Biggest Loser, Michelle Agular Whitehead has become an inspirational figure for individuals seeking to transform their bodies and their lives. Now, 12 years after winning the reality television show, Whitehead shares her struggle with self-worth beyond the scale in a new Second Edition short film from I Am Second, an organization known for telling compelling stories of changed lives.

“I can’t let the scale define my happiness. I can’t let the scale define if I’m a good wife or a good mother or a good friend. I can’t let it steal my joy first thing in the morning if it’s not the number that I want to see,” said Whitehead.

After her victory on the show, Whitehead was quickly put in the spotlight, appearing on magazine covers and traveling across the country to be a voice of hope for individuals seeking to make a life change and overcome struggles such as emotional eating like she did. In the more recent transition of shifting her focus to motherhood, she finds herself facing new obstacles and insecurity that can’t be overcome or prevented through mere physical change.

In the I Am Second Second Edition short film now available on iamsecond.com, Whitehead opens up regarding maintaining integrity, confidence and joy in all areas of life, despite weight loss and gain. Her story coincides with The Biggest Loser reboot premiering Jan. 28, 2020, on USA Network.

'I Choose Peace' Author Opens Up About His Struggle to Trust God During Loss

On the heels of the release of his book, I Choose Peace author Doug Bender opens up about the reality of the heartbreaking loss of his first child and how it has impacted his faith and journey toward peace in a new Second Edition short film from I Am Second.

I Am Second ‘Second Edition’ Film Catches Up with Doug Bender Surrounding Book’s Nov. 12 Release

NASHVILLE, Tenn., Nov. 14, 2019 - When Doug Bender, author of I Am Second’s debut book, I Am Second: Real Stories. Changing Lives., appeared in his first White Chair film seven years ago, he shared his powerful testimony of exchanging a life of loneliness for a fulfilling friendship with Jesus. Now, in conjunction with the release of his second I Am Second book, I Choose Peace: Raw Stories of Real People Finding Contentment and Happiness, Bender sits down to reflect on the reality of heartbreaking loss and how it’s impacted his faith and journey toward peace in a new Second Edition short film from I Am Second.

“One thing that draws me to the kinds of stories I Am Second tells is the rawness, and that we tell stories that are a little rough around the edges,” said Bender. “When I look at my own life, I see all these bumps in the road...and that there’s hope at the end.”

Bender recounts experiencing God’s goodness as an adolescent struggling to find friends when God answered his life-long prayer of bringing “just one good friend” into his life, which ultimately led him to know unending friendship with Christ. Since then, Bender has continued to walk with the Lord, a journey full of ups and downs that took Bender and his family through a devastating low when they were expecting their first child.

“The second book was just about to go to print, and my wife was at the doctor, getting a sonogram done,” said Bender, “...and she texts me that the doctor says our baby is ‘incompatible with life.’ That was a really ‘rock your world’ kind of moment for us. I can still see us sitting in that guy’s office with him telling us that.”

At 20 weeks along in their pregnancy, just when they were expecting to discover the gender of their first-born, the Benders instead learned that their child was alive but would not be for very long. Upon receiving this devastating news, Bender recalls feeling dark and empty, like their future as a family had been ripped away.

“I said, ‘God, I know you have a plan in all of this,’” said Bender. “‘I know you’re in charge,’ and I told Him, ‘I’m going to be real honest with You right now...this just does not seem like a good plan.’ But I heard Him say, ‘There will come a day when I will make this right.’”

In the Second Edition film, Bender reflects on how God brought him through the loss of that first child with unexpected blessings on the other side of the pain, similar to how God gifted him with friends after a long period of loneliness.

To watch the full film, visit iamsecond.com/second-edition

Bender’s personal story is also included in the new book,  I Choose Peace: Raw Stories of Real People Finding Contentment and Happiness, available now from Thomas Nelson.

I Choose Peace offers 16 unique accounts of broken people who found contentment as inspiration for readers to discover the secret to attaining peace. It features previously untold accounts from the lives of the movement’s “Seconds” who have sat in the iconic I Am Second white chair and told their stories, such as television host Kathie Lee Gifford, cultural commentator Eric Metaxas, KoRn founding member Brian “Head” Welch, Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson, Duck Dynasty’s Phil Robertson, and more. School Shooter, Mother of Columbine Victim Speak for First Time in Powerful New I Am Second Short Film

A school shooter sits down with the mother of a Columbine victim to speak for first time about their respective experiences on the opposite ends of school shootings in Unworthy, a new Conversations film from I Am Second, a global storytelling organization.

Two individuals share honestly about their experience on the opposite ends of school shootings in Unworthy, a new Conversations film from I Am Second, a global storytelling organization.

TJ Stevens walked into his high school in 1982 and began shooting. Beth Nimmo unknowingly said a final goodbye to her daughter before she left for her day at Columbine High School in 1999. I Am Second Conversations: Unworthy brings them together for the first time to speak about the days that forever changed their respective lives.

“I don’t feel worthy of this conversation but I’m honored to be here with you,” Stevens tells Nimmo.

Stevens grew up surrounded by fear. His father was an alcoholic and he was the black sheep in school. After his girlfriend broke up with him, he felt hopeless, but as he sat in his bedroom with a gun to his head, ready to pull the trigger and end his life, he heard a small, soft voice that turned his pain into anger.

“I’m methodically counting each shell. I’m putting names on the bullets,” said Stevens. “If I kill this innocent person, it will take away my pain.”

At 9 a.m. the next morning, Stevens methodically walked into his high school and began shooting above his classmates heads. But when the voice from the night before became many voices, he recognized the only way to save his hostages was to kill himself. Stevens fell to his knees ready again to take his life when a woman cried out and something bright pierced his eyes. At that moment, emotion and pain for the people in the room and their families overwhelmed him. Having not yet killed anyone, Stevens decided to walk out of the school. He spent four years in a maximum-security prison as a result of his actions.

Seventeen years after Stevens’ experience, Nimmo received a call at work alerting her to a shooting at Columbine High School where her daughter Rachel and son Craig were enrolled. Nearly 24 hours later, Nimmo was informed that Rachel was the first victim of what is now known as the Columbine High School Massacre.

“Nothing was real – total disbelief – and I remember just sinking down to the floor,” Nimmo said. “I’ll be real honest, there are a lot of those days I can’t remember.”

Shortly after Rachel’s death, Nimmo began discovering writings and journals proving Rachel’s deep relationship with God, and her desire to impact others by her faith.

“God had put a great gift in our home … but we had no idea what God’s purpose for her life and her death was,” Nimmo tearfully recounts. “She has reached around the world. She just didn’t know she was going to have to die to do it.”

Halfway through the Unworthy film, after individually sharing their journeys, Stevens and Nimmo meet for a dialogue that beautifully unfolds on camera. During the conversation, Stevens and Nimmo each express their sorrow for the pain in the other’s life and find hope in the faith that has comforted them through the years.

Broadway Star Amanda Jane Cooper Shares Her Story from Struggle to Hope in New I Am Second Film

Amanda Jane Cooper is best known for her role as Glinda in both the Broadway and National Tour version of WICKED, but as she shares in a new short film from I Am Second, a storytelling organization, the bright shining role she plays on stage hasn’t always mirrored her real life. In the new I Am Second film she opens up about her struggles finding her identity and ultimately peace.

Cooper’s love for theater started at a young age. At 15 years old, she saw WICKED when it first opened on Broadway and from then on she dreamed of playing the part of Glinda. She committed herself to the arts, studying acting and musical theater at Carnegie Mellon University, but in the process, she lost sight of her true identity.

“I didn’t have an understanding of what made me matter; being on stage was what I did and who I was,” Cooper said. “Without me even knowing it, success started to slowly become my God, and I told myself, ‘If I can achieve this or get this role, then I’ll be enough.’”

The pressure she felt led her to develop an eating disorder and a hatred for her body, which began a hard journey she would battle for years. Following her studies, she moved to New York where the struggle for acceptance and success only continued.

Cooper quickly secured off-Broadway roles and within eight months, she landed her dream job as Glinda in the WICKED National Tour.

Even though she received affirmation and applause from thousands of people every night, she admits she was still very lost. She then moved to Los Angeles to pursue a TV and film career but despite landing roles on shows including ABC’s Selfie, Disney’s Jessie, CBS’ CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and FOX’s Bones and Glee, her struggles only compounded in Hollywood.

“This war inside me was just ravenous. It almost became a place of comfort because dealing with the pain was less scary to me than the pain of what it would take to change,” Cooper said.

In her I Am Second video, Cooper discloses her internal battles with self-worth and addiction and how a conversation at an L.A. party eventually led her on a journey to find freedom and hope.

“I don’t think I ever thought it was possible to be totally free, but I was wrong,” Cooper said.

Years later, Cooper was offered to reprise her role of Glinda on the National Tour, where she played the role for twice as long as her first run, though this time her experience was completely different and for the better. Following the tour, she was invited to play the role of Glinda on Broadway.

‘FOX & Friends’ Host Shares Her Journey to Motherhood with I Am Second

FOX & Friends host Ainsley Earhardt opens up about her unexpected road to motherhood in a new White Chair Film from I Am Second, a storytelling organization.

New Short Film Featuring FOX News’ Ainsley Earhardt Releases Just Prior to Mother’s Day

Ainsley Earhardt, host of the No. 1 cable television morning show FOX & Friends, opens up about her unexpected road to motherhood in a new White Chair Film released May 7, 2019, from I Am Second, a storytelling organization.

As a girl growing up in small-town South Carolina, Earhardt was enraptured by televised events like the Oscars, and she knew that she was meant for a career on screen. Earhardt graduated with a degree in journalism, and she went on to anchor for top-ranked broadcasts on a state-level. In 2007, she moved to New York to begin her career at a national level. Everything was as she wanted it to be.

“I was a planner. I had a whole life planned out – what I was going to do, how I was going to get to New York, what internships I was going to do and what the stepping stones were going to be,” said Earhardt. “But when I started trying to have children, I was not successful.”

When Earhardt finally got pregnant after a long period of trying, she was ecstatic to see the most important part of her life plan coming to fruition. But as she progressed in her pregnancy, what should have been a routine ultrasound appointment instead revealed the greatest tragedy she would ever experience when the doctor couldn’t find a heartbeat.

Earhardt’s miscarriage only deepened her longing and pain.

“You walk down the streets of New York and you see other girls with their carriages, strollers, babies and baby bumps, and you want it so badly,” Earhardt recounts holding back tears. “I started thinking, ‘Should I have done this earlier? Is this my fault?’”

Earhardt tried to get pregnant again with no success. After deciding to take a break, they received an unexpected surprise. On Mother’s Day, Earhardt shared with her family her news of expecting.

She welcomed a healthy baby girl into her life, who today is her pride and joy, but realizes her difficult journey to motherhood was necessary in order to teach her patience and trust.

“This world is amazing, and I am loving my life. And I’m so blessed, but this is not it,” Earhardt reflected. “I just know that women are hurting. I know that men are hurting … Know that God has a plan and God works it all out. Life is such a journey. Every step of it – good or bad – is still beautiful.”

Super Bowl Champion Clint Gresham Shares how he found Freedom from a Lifelong Struggle with Anxiety, Depression in New I Am Second Film

NFL long-snapper and Super Bowl XLVIII champion Clint Gresham, who played six seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, gets honest about his lifelong struggle with anxiety, depression and addiction in a new film on I Am Second.

NFL long-snapper and Super Bowl XLVIII champion Clint Gresham, who played six seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, gets honest about his lifelong struggle with anxiety, depression and addiction in a new White Chair film from I Am Second, a global storytelling movement.

Gresham has always been sensitive to emotions, a result of complications in his birth. Diagnosed with anxiety disorder, depression and ADHD, he often experienced intense paralysis in social settings as a kid.

“I could have these massive swings back and forth of feeling ok with who I am and then at the same moment, absolutely hating the person in the mirror because I feel so intimidated by everything around me,” Gresham says in his I Am Second film.

Realizing the gratification of working hard and feeling strong, Gresham gravitated toward sports, because they made him feel like he mattered. He ended up playing college football for Texas Christian University before a successful career with the Seattle Seahawks.

In 2013, he and his Seattle Seahawks teammates won the Super Bowl, but though the win was his life pursuit, he still didn’t find it satisfying.

“The thing about trauma and anxiety and depression is that if they go unmanaged, it’s one of those things that will slowly creep back in,” Gresham explained, “And I found myself in this darker and darker and darker place of performance that felt so tedious and stressful.”

In the past, Gresham had dealt with his anxiety and depression by turning to alcohol and substances, but he sought something more sustaining. That’s when he turned to his faith.

“The thing about mental health stuff is it has nothing to do with internal strength,” said Gresham. “There is brain science that talks about the idea that functions more as a disease like cancer or diabetes.

“You would never tell somebody that has cancer, ‘If you were just a little stronger, then you wouldn’t be having this disease.’ But we kind of do that with people battling addiction or mental health problems,” continued Gresham.

In the I Am Second film, Gresham explains how he found freedom by becoming honest with God about his struggle and letting God walk with him through the pain.

‘LOUD KRAZY LOVE’ Releases New Trailer in Anticipation of December 14 SHOWTIME® Premiere

A new trailer for LOUD KRAZY LOVE, the unconventional true-life story chronicling the chaotic and unexpected life of rock star and KoRn co-founder Brian “Head” Welch, released prior to the film’s Dec. 14 premiere on SHOWTIME®.

Award-Winning Coming-of-Age Story Chronicles Harrowing Journey of KoRn Founding Member Brian ‘Head’ Welch and His Daughter

DALLAS, Dec. 4, 2018 – A new trailer for LOUD KRAZY LOVE, the unconventional true-life story chronicling the chaotic and unexpected life of rock star and KoRn co-founder Brian “Head” Welch, released today prior to the film’s Dec. 14 premiere on SHOWTIME®.

Four years in the making, LOUD KRAZY LOVE is produced by I Am Second and Ditore Mayo Entertainment and subverts the standard sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll narrative, exploring Brian’s identity as a father and the complicated relationship he shares with his daughter Jennea.

“This movie is really special to me,” said Brian. “It’s not only my story with KoRn, it’s also Jennea’s story. It starts with her being born into the crazy world of rock ‘n’ roll and ends with a beautiful restoration.”

The sound Brian “Head” Welch helped pioneer with KoRn in the early ‘90s provided identity to a generation of misfits and made him a global rock star. Famous, wealthy and worshipped in the spotlight, an adolescent self-loathing relentlessly haunted him in the shadows – until the day a tiny miracle was born. By the time he walked out on a $23 million record deal in 2005, desperate to kick a devastating crystal meth habit, all he wanted was to become a good father.

The truly hard part had just begun.

LOUD KRAZY LOVE details the harrowing journey of Brian and his daughter Jennea growing up together with chaotic courage and unconventional faith. Far beyond a rock doc, this fearless coming-of-age story grapples with teenage depression, the quest for identity, and the hope of a father willing to do anything for the one he loves.

“Much like the true story it tells, LOUD KRAZY LOVE is a complex cocktail of mess and emotion. It is uncensored, unpredictable and intensely beautiful,” said Director Trey Hill. “The details shared of Brian & Jennea’s life are shocking, hilarious, frightening and even miraculous. It’s crazy honest, and that’s what makes it relatable.”

LOUD KRAZY LOVE includes exclusive access of Brian on tour and at home, in-depth interviews with him, his family and his bandmates, and two decades worth of never-before-seen material from Brian and KoRn.

Scott Mayo joins Hill, both of whom are first-time feature filmmakers, as a director of LOUD KRAZY LOVE. Samuel Ditore of Ditore Mayo Entertainment and John Humphrey of I Am Second Media produced the film.

Brian first partnered with I Am Second for the organization’s White Chair short film series 10 years ago when he shared his personal story of leaving KoRn. Of the more than 100 films to date on IAmSecond.com, Brian’s continues to be one of the most watched.

“We’ve known Brian for nearly a decade, but his White Chair film gives only a small slice of his story,” said Humphrey, vice president of I Am Second Media. “LOUD KRAZY LOVE delves deep into the full intricacies and remarkable trajectory of Brian’s life story. We hope audiences are inspired to emulate and embody Brian’s fearlessness portrayed so evidently in this film.”

LOUD KRAZY LOVE debuted in the Spring during the 2018 Nashville Film Festival and 2018 Dallas International Film Festival where it took home the Audience Award for Best Feature Documentary.

“This film is a labor of love four years in the making,” said Mayo, director. “When we set out to document Brian’s return to KoRn after his eight-year hiatus, we had no idea the end result would be this beautiful father-daughter narrative. LOUD KRAZY LOVE inspires hope that fearless love can heal a broken relationship.”

LOUD KRAZY LOVE will premiere on SHOWTIME Dec. 14. For additional information, visit www.LoudKrazyLove.com.

Film, TV and Music Powerhouse Duo David and Tamela Mann Get Real in New I Am Second Film

Film, TV and Music Powerhouse Duo David and Tamela Mann share intimate details about their childhood and how they overcame the baggage each brought into their marriage in a new short film from I Am Second.

NASHVILLE, Tenn., Nov. 19, 2018 Actor, comedian and producer David Mann and award-winning gospel singer Tamela Mann have been a powerhouse duo in the film, television and music world over the last decade. Now, on the heels of the release of their first duet album and memoir, Us Against the World, the couple is sharing intimate details about their childhood and how they overcame the baggage each brought into their marriage in a new short film from I Am Second.

“We’re a bit dysfunctional, if you ask us,” David jokingly says in the film. “We put the ‘fun’ in dysfunction,” Tamela chimes in.

Between David and Tamela, they have three hit TV shows, two No. 1 albums, an independent music and entertainment label, several national stand-up comedy tours, and a Grammy. A key element of the Mann’s platform has always been family and togetherness, and as they share in the I Am Second film, their difficult, complex backgrounds played a part in forming their principles.

David watched his mom suffer from a number of abusive relationships, which set him on a path of anger toward men.

“I could remember at three years old saying, ‘Nobody else will ever hit my mom again,’” said David. “It became a cycle of always protecting, always protecting. What it did was turn me into a vicious little machine. I know people see today, like, this comedian, funny guy, but that turned me into a machine and I couldn’t turn off.”

David said he didn’t trust men and didn’t care.

On the flipside, Tamela dealt with rejection from men a young age. As the youngest of 14 kids, she was the only one of her siblings with a different father who was also absent from her life. “I always had a bite. I always had a lash out,” said Tamela.

Tamela and David met in high school and married a few years later.

“Coming in with the baggage that [Tamela] came in with, the baggage that I came in with – eventually there’s going to be an explosion,” David said.

Together, David and Tamela made a decision to build their marriage and their family on a foundation of faith that God could heal the pain of their past and lead them toward a future full of love, laughter and goodness. They committed to pushing and encouraging each other to always be greater than they thought they could be, and to face down challenges with Jesus as their center.

“We don’t have a perfect marriage – it’s a work in progress – but what we do have to give is hope. If we can make it through – if God’s grace can get us through – it can help anybody,” said David.

Of Mice & Men Former Lead Singer Opens Up About Leaving the Band, Overcoming Painful Genetic Disorder in New I Am Second Short Film

Former rock star Austin Carlile, founder and lead singer of Of Mice & Men, shares the ups and downs of his struggle with a genetic disorder and his miraculous healing in a new film released today from I Am Second.

NASHVILLE, Tenn., Oct. 24, 2018 Austin Carlile, founder and former lead singer of Of Mice & Men, shares the ups and downs of his struggle with a genetic disorder and his miraculous healing in a new film released today from I Am Second, a global storytelling organization.

“When we first heard Austin’s story, we knew we had to share it with the world through I Am Second,” said I Am Second President Lance Villio. “Austin’s powerful journey shows that no matter how far we run away from God, He will always welcome us back with open arms. That is a message of which we all need to be reminded.”

Carlile’s life dramatically changed at the age of 17 when his mother unexpectedly passed away from an aneurysm caused by an undiagnosed case of Marfan syndrome, a genetic disorder of connective tissue. Carlile soon discovered he also carries the genetic mutation for the syndrome, though he didn’t realize at the time the lifelong pain it would cause.

Emotionally angry at God for taking his mother away and physically distraught from Marfan syndrome, Carlile discovered music as an outlet for his rage and pain. He founded the band Of Mice & Men and started writing about tough issues such as bullying, depression, suicide and losing loved ones.

“When music came into my life, I saw it as my new god,” Carlile says in the film.

As Carlile began touring, the pain of Marfan syndrome began to take its toll. He sought to mask it with alcohol and drug abuse, but soon found himself in an unhealthy cycle. Because of his diagnosis, doctors advised him against any physical activity and yet he jumped off stage and into mosh pits nightly. After an extensive heart surgery to replace a portion of his aorta, he returned to the band, but the issues got worse.

Unable to cope with the pain and unsure of the purpose in his life, Carlile called his dad to ask what he was doing wrong. His dad replied with a simple question, “Where’s God in your life?”

Those words hung on Carlile’s spirit and forever changed him. He became sober, and turned his life over to God. Little did he know, what that would mean.

Still in excruciating pain each time he performed, doctors told Carlile in October 2016 he could no longer sing, as each time he did, it tore holes in his spine.

“Everything I was, was in that band, but I walked away and I knew God was calling me to do something different,” said Carlile.

Carlile moved to Costa Rica and taught music, coached a baseball team and ran sound for his father’s church, but the pain from his disease did not cease. Carlile asked God to take the pain from him and soon encountered a group of missionaries that would be an answer to his prayer.

He shares the details of the miraculous moment in his I Am Second film, which can be seen at IAmSecond.com.

“The people that have followed me, they have to know now what actually brought me through those things and that was Christ,” said Carlile.

Tori Kelly Shares the Emotional Story of Finding Her Voice in New I Am Second Short Film

Tori Kelly partners with I Am Second to inspire others with her powerful story of discovering her true identity.

NASHVILLE, Tenn., Sept. 20, 2018 Singer-songwriter Tori Kelly, who recently released her new album, Hiding Place, has achieved multiple successes within the music industry, but as she describes in a short film released today from I Am Second, a global storytelling organization, it was the difficult journey to fame that shaped her into the GRAMMY nominated musician she is today.

Tori released her full-length debut album, Unbreakable Smile, in 2015, which premiered at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and earned her a GRAMMY nomination in the Best New Artist category. A year later, she starred alongside Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Seth MacFarlane, Scarlett Johansson, John C. Reilly and Taron Egerton in the animated film Sing, voicing the part of the shy elephant named Meena. Most recently, she has been seen in the national “Songs for All Your Sides” Nationwide ad campaign and has teamed with 12-time Grammy Award-winning gospel legend Kirk Franklin to release Hiding Place, her first gospel album.

Tori is the newest individual to join I Am Second for its White Chair Film series, which has featured more than 100 musicians, actors, athletes, cultural influencers and everyday people. In the film, Tori dives into her personal story and her heart, which is so beautifully reflected in her music.

“I Am Second wants to tell real stories of individuals who have been beautifully broken and found restoration through Jesus,” said I Am Second President Lance Villio. “Tori did not hold back in sharing both the joys and heartaches that are part of her life story. I have no doubt people will connect with her in a powerful way through this film and be encouraged by her raw honesty.”

Growing up, Tori was continually lauded by those around her as an “amazing singer.” She embraced this as her identity, which made it even harder when doors began to continually close on her.

By age 12, she signed with a record company, only to have the deal fall through. As she pursued other opportunities, she continued to be told “no.”

“Every executive that I would talk to, there was always some reason they didn’t want to sign me,” she said. “They wanted me to be this outgoing, bubbly personality, which I didn’t have, and that’s when I really started comparing myself to other people.”

In the I Am Second film, Tori emotionally explains how she discovered her voice and shares a powerful message to her 12-year-old self and others who are struggling with finding their true identity.

‘America’s Got Talent’ Golden Buzzer Finalist who Moved Simon Cowell to Tears Shares His Story that Captured America’s Heart in New Film

I Am Second releases a White Chair film featuring “America’s Got Talent” Golden Buzzer Recipient Michael Ketterer, the singer and father of six who captured America’s hearts with his soulful voice and personal story.

Michael Ketterer and Wife Featured in I Am Second White Chair Film

NASHVILLE, Tenn., Aug. 29, 2018 I Am Second, a global storytelling organization, today released a new White Chair film featuring “America’s Got Talent” Golden Buzzer Recipient Michael Ketterer, the singer and father of six who captured America’s hearts with his soulful voice and personal story.

Ketterer performed James Bay’s “Us” on last night’s “America’s Got Talent” live show, receiving a standing ovation from the crowd and moving judge Simon Cowell to tears.

“Michael, look, oh gosh, as a dad, I get why … I can’t imagine what you’ve done and the fact that you’re on the show and you really need this, and you’re a really, really special guy, and I don’t know, there’s something about you,” said Cowell after last night’s performance.

Judge Howie Mandel agreed, saying, “You deserve to be here. This is not a sob story. This is a happy story. People should be led and inspired by who you are and how you are.”

In the I Am Second film released today, Michael sits with his wife Ivey to share about his experience auditioning for the reality television program and more about the journey of growing their family through adoption.

“The moment I stepped out onto the stage, it was just extremely special to get to perform a song to my children in front of the world, and I got to tell them how much I love them,” said Michael in the film.

While Michael and Ivey admit they never expected to be parents, they now have six children, five adopted out of foster care.

“When we went into foster care they were like, ‘What do you have to offer?’” said Ivey. “I was like, ‘I have two things I can offer children. I have time, and I have love.’”

In the I Am Second White Chair film, the Ketterers share details of their sometimes difficult journey of growing their family, which included saying “yes” to the unexpected and trusting God. To watch their unique and powerful story, visit iamsecond.com.

Olympic Gold Medalist Shawn Johnson and Husband Open Up about Marriage and Miscarriage in New Short Film

U.S. Olympic Gold Medalist Shawn Johnson, now in retirement and married, sits down with her husband Andrew East to share updates on her joys and struggles from off the mat in a new Second Edition film from I Am Second.

‘Second Edition’ Film from I Am Second Shares Life after Johnson’s 2016 White Chair Interview

PLANO, Texas, June 26, 2018 Much has happened in the two years since U.S. Olympic Gold Medalist Shawn Johnson released her I Am Second White Chair film in which she discussed her fears of failure and disappointment during her career as a gymnast. Now in retirement and married, I Am Second, a global storytelling organization, today released a new Second Edition film featuring Shawn sharing updates on her joys and struggles from off the mat.

Shawn opens this new film recapping her feeling of a loss of purpose after the 2008 Olympic games and how she rediscovered it through a relationship with God, before being joined by her husband Andrew East. Sitting side-by-side, Johnson describes meeting and falling head over heels for Andrew.

Marriage has brought new joys and challenges for Shawn, who in the fall of 2017 experience her greatest moment of finding out she was pregnant only to experience the tragedy of miscarriage days later.

“I had these guilty feelings that if could not take care of child for one week in my stomach, I couldn’t raise a child on my own,” Johnson describes in the film. “I felt guilty to Andrew that I had lost his child, and I felt guilty to God that I lost his child. It was probably the hardest thing I have ever had to go through. I have never felt loss like that.”

Holding hands and sitting side-by-side, Andrew and Shawn discuss how Scripture and encouragement from others helped them through this hardship.

“No matter what you go through you will always come out of it,” said Shawn. “If you believe in Him and have faith in Him you will come out stronger than you were before.”

As the 2007 individual all-around World Champion and having won the all-around at the 2008 Olympic Trials, nearly every news outlet predicted then 16-year-old Shawn would take home the gold at the 2008 Beijing games. But despite performing what she describes as the best routine of her entire life, Shawn took home three silver and one gold medal in the Olympic games.

Similarly, Andrew ended his college football career at Vanderbilt University as the highest rated long snapper in all of college football, yet has struggled to find success in the NFL. In the Second Edition film, Andrew explains how Shawn’s Olympic experience has helped him through his own professional football journey.

“In my four years, I’ve signed six different contracts with four different teams,” Andrew said. “It’s taken me two years to fully realize my worth is not in football. It’s been so wonderful being married to Shawn for a million different reasons but her truly understanding the difficulty I was going through – I’m not sure I could have made it through that first year after being cut without her being there.”

To watch Shawn and Andrew’s full Second Edition film, visit iamsecond.com.

Second Edition is a new storytelling feature from I Am Second, which is best known for its White Chair Film Series. Through Second Edition, individuals who have shared their story in the White Chair Film Series provide an update to what has happened in their life since its release.

In addition to Shawn, Figure Skating Champion and Olympic Gold Medalist Scott Hamilton and Hip Hop and Spoken Word artist Propaganda have also released Second Edition films. For more information, visit iamsecond.com/second-edition.

New Film Pairs Two Unlikely Friends for a Discussion on Race, Acceptance and Forgiveness

A former Neo-Nazi and his African-American probation officer sit down side-by-side for a discussion on their unlikely friendship and how it forever changed each of their lives in the new Conversations film from I Am Second, a global storytelling organization.

Former Neo-Nazi and His African-American Probation Officer featured in the I Am Second Conversations series

NASHVILLE, Tenn., June 7, 2018 A former Neo-Nazi and his African-American probation officer sit down side-by-side for a discussion on their unlikely friendship and how it forever changed each of their lives in the new Conversations film from I Am Second, a global storytelling organization.

Michael Kent experienced his first encounter with racism as a 12-year-old little boy when his black friend’s mom told her son she didn’t want Kent in his house because he was white. It was in that moment that his attitude began to change. By age 15, Kent began his involvement with Neo-Nazis groups, attending rallies and events.

Sitting across from his probation officer Tiffany Whittier, Kent admits that he has hurt a lot of people, but when Whittier arrived at his home for their first meeting – at night by herself – he knew she was different.

“I gained a lot of respect for her because I’ve never had – not even my own race, not even my own people – come to my house by themselves,” said Kent. “She showed up that day, and I realized she had some courage.”

But it was more than courage that brought these two together. Throughout I Am Second Conversations: An Unlikely Friendship, Kent and Whittier discuss their first encounter and first impressions and how their court-ordered match-up turned into friendship.

“I don’t get it but I’m very thankful that day you came to my gate,” Kent said to Whittier. “You opened my eyes to a lot of things. You let me know there is a lot of beauty in this world beyond color, beyond anything. Because you showed me more love than I got from my own race, my own culture.”

Whittier pushed Kent to remove the negative in his life and look for the positive, but it wasn’t only Kent who found his life different as a result of their relationship. Through meeting Kent, Whittier grew her own sense of purpose.

“I’m not sure I’ve ever told you but I love you,” Whittier said to Kent. “You’ve changed me.”

Kent still wrestles with issues resulting from his past, but is finding peace with the help of Whittier.

“How can somebody respect me and accept me for the things I did?” Kent questions. “That’s why I’ve had all that hate in me, because who would want me?”

Whittier’s response is simple, “God.” At the end of the powerful conversation, Whittier reminds Kent that he must forgive himself because not only has she forgiven him, but ultimately God has.

Whittier’s message is one in which all struggling with their past mistakes can find comfort. Given the rise of racial tensions in our nation, I Am Second Conversations: An Unlikely Friendship provides a refreshing look at the role of love in healing and reconciliation.

I Am Second Conversations is a new storytelling feature for I Am Second, which is best known for its White Chair Film Series. Conversations invites two individuals with unique perspectives on their shared experiences to sit across from each other and have dialogue.

“We are honored to tell this incredible story of how God used Tiffany to restore hope and bring about change in Michael’s life,” said Lance Villio, president of I Am Second. “We believe I Am Second Conversations are timely for where we are as a culture. We believe in the power of coming together in the midst of our differences. There are no good guys or bad guys, just real people. I Am Second Conversations celebrates one thing – restoration only found in Jesus.”

Striving for Second in the Indy 500

Stefan Wilson will show he is committed to living Second as he aims to come in first in the 2018 Indy 500.

I Am Second Partners with Canoe Studios to Sponsor Stefan Wilson in Upcoming Race

NASHVILLE, Tenn., May 17, 2018 I Am Second, a global storytelling organization, has joined Canoe Studios, a Manhattan based photography studio and event space, to sponsor Andretti Autosport racing driver Stefan Wilson in the May 27 Indianapolis 500.

The mission of I Am Second is to inspire others to become Second through serving and loving others by putting Jesus first. In partnership with Canoe Studios, the movement has produced more than 125 unscripted conversations, short films and documentary features.

“I Am Second is honored to partner with Stefan for such a historic and culturally relevant event,” said Lance Villio, president of I Am Second. “We are grateful that he would choose to boldly place the I Am Second logo on his car to remind people that even though his aim is to come in first in the 2018 Indy 500, he is committed to living Second.”

Wilson’s No. 25 car embodies what it means to be Second. In addition to the I Am Second and Canoe Studios logos, Wilson’s #Driven2SaveLives Honda IndyCar, unveiled Monday, includes the names of 25 Indiana residents currently awaiting life-saving organ transplants.

“Stefan is an exceptional driver with a true passion for racing, but also a special man with a passion for others,” said Canoe Studios Founder and President David Seabrook. “His heart is revealed by his partnership with #Driven2SaveLives as they together seek to raise awareness for the 115,000 individuals currently awaiting organs in this country.”

Since its founding in 2008, I Am Second, in partnership with its founder Norm Miller of Interstate Batteries, has been a big supporter of the racing industry. Several drivers, including Darrell Waltrip, Trevor Bayne, Michael McDowell, David Starr, Justin Alleger and Ricky Stenhouse Jr., have appeared in I Am Second’s flagship White Chair films. Additionally, the organization has sponsored cars and hosted events at other races, including the Daytona 500.

“Being partnered with Canoe Studios and I Am Second means so much to me,” said Wilson. “I feel fortunate to be aligned with some incredible organizations, all of which I have a strong connection to, personally. I can’t wait to jump in the car on May 15.”
